The Public Relations and Communications Association has appointed Lerato Motloung as Chair of its Africa NextGen Group, bringing in a new leadership structure designed to support the long-term growth of the continent’s emerging communications talent.
Motloung, Account Director at Havas South Africa, takes over from Cherná Lutta, who steps down having built the group into one of PRCA Africa’s most active communities. Under Lutta’s leadership, the group launched breakfast events and student bootcamps across South Africa, introduced online learning, and delivered its inaugural NextGen Conference.
Joining Motloung is Sarah-Justine Ward, Social and Influencer Lead at Clockwork, who steps in as Vice-Chair with a clear succession mandate , serve two years alongside Motloung before assuming the Chair role herself. Thulisa Mvandaba, PR Account Manager at Havas South Africa, joins the committee, bringing expertise in media relations and client management.
As Chair, Motloung also takes a seat on the PRCA Africa Executive Committee, giving early-career professionals a direct voice in the association’s wider strategic direction.
“The NextGen Group has become a valuable community where emerging professionals can learn from one another, build meaningful connections and develop the skills they need to thrive,” Motloung said. “I’m also excited to join the PRCA Africa Executive Committee, ensuring that the voice of early-career professionals are represented as we help shape the wider direction of PRCA Africa.”
Ward said the succession model was central to the group’s long-term ambitions. “Having a clear succession model allows us to think long-term, build on the strong foundations already in place and ensure the group continues to evolve.”
PRCA Head of International Membership Jo Brophy described Lutta’s contribution as foundational. “Cherná has done an exceptional job leading the NextGen Group and has helped establish a thriving community that continues to go from strength to strength.”
