1. THE BIG STORY

South Africa’s Anti-Immigrant Crisis: When the Narrative Vacuum Wins

Over 900 people were arrested across South Africa last week as nationwide anti-immigrant protests by the March and March movement turned violent, with shops looted, one person shot dead, and foreign nationals displaced across multiple provinces. The crisis has strained diplomatic relations with Nigeria, Ghana, and Mozambique, all of which have begun repatriating their citizens. President Ramaphosa acknowledged the grievances but was responding to a narrative that had been building for months, with no meaningful government counter-messaging.

Why it matters to African Comms: This crisis was not born from the issue. It was born from a narrative vacuum. Protest organisers spent months building a simple, repeatable, emotionally charged message while the government offered nothing to compete with it. When your client is sitting on a sensitive issue, the question is not whether to communicate. It is whether to communicate on your terms or someone else’s.

What to do about it: Run a narrative gap audit for your most sensitive mandates. Map out every audience that could feel blindsided and build a communication sequence to reach them before any external event forces the issue. Then test your crisis statement template today, not during a crisis.

2. THE STAT THAT CUTS THROUGH THE NOISE

The Data: Kenya and Nigeria recorded overall news trust figures of 68% in the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026, placing both countries joint first among all 48 markets surveyed globally. South Africa dropped 5 percentage points in a single year, one of the steepest declines globally.

The Comms Takeaway: Kenyan and Nigerian audiences trust news more than almost anyone else on earth, which means earned media in these markets still carries genuine weight. A well-placed, well-sourced media story can genuinely move people. But high-trust environments are also more sensitive to misinformation and more damaging when brands are caught being less than transparent. Credibility is your most valuable currency. Spend it carefully.

3. PEOPLE IN COMMS SPOTLIGHT

Victor Nyongesa, Manager, Marketing, Brand & Communications, Acorn Holdings πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ

After nearly four years shaping corporate communications at Airtel Kenya, Victor Nyongesa has made a deliberate move into real estate, joining Acorn Holdings as Manager, Marketing, Brand and Communications. Acorn is the developer behind Qwetu and Qejani student hostels, with 15 properties operational and more in development across Kenya.

His first major focus is leading the go-to-market strategy for the Zinduka Graduate Enterprise Programme, a financing model that enables students to access accommodation through housing loans and, post-graduation, enterprise financing. It is the kind of communications brief that demands both strategic clarity and social impact storytelling.

On the move, Victor is direct: “One of the biggest lessons I carry from Airtel is the ability to move with urgency. Working in a fast-paced environment taught me to make timely decisions, adapt quickly, and respond effectively in an ever-evolving media landscape.”

He also offers a sharp insight for any communicator considering an industry switch: the skill that transfers most cleanly across any sector is the ability to simplify complexity, whether that means explaining telecom infrastructure or breaking down real estate financing to a first-time student tenant.

The Monday Brief by Comms Arena celebrates Victor Nyongesa for a move that proves the best communications professionals are not defined by the industry they come from, but by the clarity they bring to every story they tell.
